How to clean a refrigerator

If cleaning the refrigerator is on the work order, do this first before cleaning any other part of the house.

The freezer

  • If its not defrosted and has ice that’s not loose, you will need to skip those areas.
  • If there is loose ice, place in the sink
  • If its too full to move items as you clean, pull some out
  • If possible, leave everything inside and shift everything to one side and clean the exposed area.
  • Use the general purpose cleaner and a clothe to spray and wipe
  • Shift everything over to the other side, and repeat.

The fridge

  • Start with the top shelf.
  • Move everything over to one side and clean the exposed area.
  • Use general purpose cleaner and a white pad to remove any tough areas. Finish by wiping with a clothe. Spray additional general purpose cleaner as needed.
  • If you need to remove items because it is too full to clean, set on the floor in the order it was setting in the fridge. Make sure it goes back in the fridge in the same order once the area is cleaned.
  • Once a shelf is cleaned, move to the next shelf below and repeat steps
  • Drawers and bins should be removed and cleaned inside and out
  • Once removed, clean all the exposed area below and surrounding the drawer
  • For door shelves, remove a few items, then side the rest over to expose the surface, Spray and wipe clean.
  • When placing the items back, make sure and wipe the bottom of each item clean before setting it back in it’s place.

When finished with the inside of the fridge, continue cleaning the kitchen in the order you normally would.
